Social Media Research Dissemination Initiative
The Social Media Research Dissemination Initiative (SMRDI) is an innovative university collaborative investing in social media research dissemination with funding from the National Science Foundation.
SMRDI will:
Set-up, customize and support your social media accounts across multiple social media platforms
Provide training sessions and resources for your team members to become experts in social media research dissemination
Translate your project updates, research reports and activities into engaging, interactive social media content - with monitoring and approvals keeping you in the driver's seat each step of the way
In short, SMRDI will connect your project to a world of funders, policymakers, newsmedia and community stakeholders through social media. Our professionally trained team is ready to unleash the power and infinite potential of social media to help you reach your research dissemination goals online.
The SMRDI is managed through one of Jomoworks' University partners: North Carolina Central University's Division of Research and Sponsored Programs. This innovative partnership allows the SMRDI to offer best-in-class service to SMRDI clients through the NCCU Department of Computer Information Systems, the Department of Mass Communication and the Fab Lab, a collaborative and global network started at MIT to provide widespread access to modern means of invention.
The SMRDI will assign your research project team a dedicated project coordinator who will contact your team to discuss the process and answer any questions. Once your research team and our account manager have “ironed-out” the details, SMRDI begins to provide social media support for your research project.
SMRDI Affiliated Faculty and Administrators

Dr. Alisha Malloy, Associate Professor, Business
The SMRDI has four goals:
Support research organizations in their efforts to disseminate findings via social media
Provide Internship and Co-curricular opportunities for undergraduate students
Expose K - 12 students to professional careers in dissemination science
Learn more about (conduct research) on social media dissemination science
Faculty Development Workshop
This engaging, 90 minute training workshop is designed for researchers willing to think beyond the peer-reviewed journal article and embrace the world of digital and social media possibilities for research dissemination. Supported by the Social Media Research Dissemination Initiative, this workshop features:
Project-specific, customized dissemination recommendations
Facilitators trained in social media research dissemination
The latest findings from dissemination and implementation science
On-going support and SMRDI consultation
NCCU was the first HBCU with a fully operating Fab Lab registered with the Fab Foundation’s global community of researchers, makers, and innovators.
Fab Foundation supports Fab Labs that provide students with access to tools and technology for innovation and invention.

In 2018, SMRDI received funding from the National Science Foundation to identify opportunities that can emerge from academic research, and gain skills in entrepreneurship.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps program prepares scientists and engineers to extend their focus beyond the university laboratory and accelerates the economic and societal benefits of NSF-funded, basic-research projects that are ready to move toward commercialization.
Undergrads receive training on research dissemination and implementation science at NCCU’s Fab Lab.
Recent graduates Yash Chadha and Alexis Harrison led SMRDI as Social Media Representatives in 2018.
